An Investment in Equipment for Older Persons and Persons with Disability
The Parliamentary Secretariat for Citizenship and Communities provided 64 wheelchairs and 7 mattresses, with the investment of around €20,000 from IIP funds. This equipment will be used by the older persons residing in St Vincent De Paul and by persons with a disability residing in those residences which fall under the responsibility of Aġenzija Sapport.
Minister for the Family, Children’s Rights and Social Solidarity Michael Falzon spoke about the team spirit present in this government, which is partially part of the success in vulnerable social areas, mainly those for ageing and persons with disability. Minister Falzon mentioned the governments’ commitment towards pensioners and the rise in pensions in the past years. The Minister also reiterated the government’s efforts with people having a severe disability, the latter benefiting from a weekly rise from €150 to €161.40, equivalent to the National Minimum Wage. Minister Falzon also spoke about the Narċis Project, which will soon start to operate at the St Vincent de Paul Residence.
“Once again, we are seeing that thanks to the funds brought about by foreign direct investment, we are continuing to invest in our community. This time, we saw to providing assistance to our elderly, as well as persons with a disability, through the purchase of wheelchairs and motor mattresses,” said the Parliamentary Secretary for Citizenship and Communities Alex Muscat. He reiterated that this initiative is one of many which have been announced during the past weeks and that their main objective is to further help our communities develop socially. “We are seeing the benefits of the IIP which has brought about an unprecedented investment. The new residence regulations under discussion, which will replace the current IIP, will seek to further strengthen such investment in our communities,” he concluded.
Parliamentary Secretary for Active Ageing and Persons with Disability Silvio Parnis said that this donation will further assist in providing the best possible service to older persons and persons with disability who live in these residences. Along with the improvements that this government is making in these sectors, this equipment will further help older persons and persons with disability live a more comfortable life, concluded Parliamentary Secretary Parnis.
